Commercial flood lighting technology

It is difficult to give rigid and rigid regulations on floodlighting of buildings for anything that involves artistic appreciation. However, the following suggestions can be put forward as general principles unless conditions are not met.

(1) The exterior scene should be considered as a whole. Both the shaded side and the brightly lit side should be given equal attention.

(2) Floodlights must be installed in a position that can produce coherent light flow. The main light direction should not overlap with the main observation direction.

(3) The key parts of the building (such as the lines of the roof, etc.) must be illuminated. Unless a floating effect is required, illuminating the bottom of the building is also the main thing. Street lights in cities and even the interior lighting of buildings can be used without the need for additional floodlights. In order to make the building appear three-dimensional, the side walls must be illuminated. This is different from the treatment method of the main surface of the building, and the effect of color or brightness contrast must be used.

(4) For features on vertical surfaces, such as columns, towers and spires, it is not advisable to make the light irradiated from all sides equal, otherwise it will appear dull.

(5) Irregular use of blinds and interior lighting generally does not look good on the exterior of a building, but in fact it is difficult to avoid. If they are used in a planned way, some buildings can be made without external lighting.

(6) It is not required to illuminate the entire surface of the building evenly. In fact, gradually decreasing light can make the building look taller. If this effect is not needed, the method of projecting light on the top can also be used to show the clear edge outline of the building and give the feeling of uniform lighting. If some floodlights are fixed on the surface of the building, even short-distance offset floodlighting will cause excessive brightness differences. If windows or other features appear between the floodlighting areas, the brightness difference will make the span of the floodlighting area produce an effect of five or six times the offset distance.

(7) Use certain features, such as trees, statues and fountains, to illuminate them with colored light to make them appear dark outlines, and also to illuminate them on the walls of the building to form shadows. For the spire or arch of the building, a stronger background light can be used, which has excellent effects.

(8) The lighting equipment cannot be seen from any normal line of sight, and the position of the lights cannot be disrupted by individual bright spots on the surface of the building.
